You know more French than you can summon when the moment arrives. The person across from you is waiting, and suddenly every word feels like a choice that must be perfect.
I have a more useful ambition for you: to be understood, to stay present, and to make someone want to keep talking. Those things are possible long before your French feels complete.
Begin with one real scene.
“I want to speak better French” is a lovely wish, but it does not tell us what to practice tonight. “I want to introduce myself at a dinner in Paris” does. So does a meeting with a French colleague, a visit with your partner’s family, or the moment you ask a host if you may stay for another glass.
Choose the scene and identify the words that belong to it. Who is in front of you? What do you want them to understand about you? What might they ask in return? This is where private French conversation coaching becomes personal.
Build a small repertoire, then loosen it.
A few phrases that you can say naturally are more valuable than a page of beautiful sentences you cannot reach under pressure. Practice an opening, a question, a way to clarify, and a graceful ending. For example, Qu’en pensez-vous ? invites an opinion. Je cherche le mot juste buys you a moment to find the right word.
Then change the conditions. Let your partner answer unexpectedly. Ask a follow-up. Tell the same story in fewer words. If you can take a different route and still sound like yourself, you are building conversational freedom.
Confidence is not the absence of a pause. Sometimes it is knowing what to do with one.
Keep your voice in the room.
An accent is part of a person. We can refine sounds and rhythm so your meaning lands clearly without erasing what makes your voice yours. We can also work on the social detail behind a sentence: a warmer introduction, a gentler disagreement, or the moment to shift from speaking to listening.
