Make room for the other person.
A good opening does three things: it acknowledges the moment, gives the other person an easy way in, and leaves space for a real answer. Choose vous when you are meeting someone in a professional setting or are unsure of the relationship. The phrases below are starting points, not lines to perform.

You have been introduced to a French-speaking colleague, client, or host. Begin with interest in their experience before moving into your own agenda.

Read the room: If their answer is brief, give them an easy exit. If they offer a story, ask about that story before talking about yourself.
The dinner invitation.
Someone has welcomed you into their home or invited you to join a table. Acknowledge the invitation first; then open a conversation around something personal to your host.

Read the room: If you are speaking with a close friend, the informal tu may feel more natural. With a new host, vous is a gracious place to begin.
